Mass Bathing Session For The Cats

Our beloved feline friends got their "spa' session last Sunday, 21st August 2011. Within 2 hours, we managed to bath 14 cats, including kittens, much to our delight.

O!Sweet Cake In Support of SPCA KK

Most people would say 'yes, please' to at least a slice of cake. Cakes, as we all know, are usually one of the must-have in occasions; birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, weddings, farewell parties, etc. From 1st May to 30th June 2011, O!Sweet Cake is giving 10% of the total orders throughout the said duration to SPCA KK! Yay!

Beside having the "oh, just nice sweetness" and tasty cakes, O! Sweet Cake does amazingly with hand-drawn images on the cakes. Cheez Is Adopted!

For those who has been following us on our adoption page in Facebook, you would have known that there's this adorable kitten called Cheez which was up for adoption. We are happy to share the good news that Cheez was adopted today by Miranda and her family last Friday, 15th April 2011.

Miranda is able to supervise her young ones around Cheez (now named Twinkle) and their other kitten, Princess, to ensure both her young children and the kittens are safe around each other. This is one good example of exposing and teaching children to love animals and grooming them to be a responsible pet owners as their parents are. Miranda and family, thank you so much for supporting SPCA KK's adoption programme.

SPCA is a society where the public can give away@ dump their unwanted pets

as SPCA members are working full time, we are not able to collect the carcasses of animals which got hit on the road and dispose them.

However, members of the public could help by stopping their car ( if they spot a carcass on the road) by the roadside and just remove the carcasses by putting it by the side of the road to avoid it from being run over by cars again and again

A Day In A Life of the SPCA Members

Most people in our society here in Kota Kinabalu are not aware that SPCA KK is run 100% by volunteers. SPCA KK is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), a Non-Profit Organisation which depends solely on donations for its funding to operate.

As ALL members that are active with the rescue/inspectorate tasks are working full time, we would really appreciate it if the members of the public would give some understanding to our mode of operation, to our response time. We are doing this voluntarily, on our "free" time.

This is the daily scenario, as the active members who are doing the rescue and taking care of the animals at the temporary shelters:

5.30 am : 2 members leave the house to go to the cat shelters while another goes to the dog shelter to feed the cats/dogs, give medication to those that are under medication

7.00-7.30 am : Leaves for work - yes, we do have to earn a living someplace else

8:00-5:00 pm : One member takes up the duty of answering the hotline number (Thank you Celcom!), and delegates the cases among 6 members who are free or could leave work for a moment, prioritised in accordance to the urgency of the reported cases. There are about 5 cases in average for a day, so just imagine the running around the city to attend to urgent cases.

5:00 pm: Leaves work and heads to the shelters to feed the cats/dogs, while the others would attend to the pending reported cases.

8:00 pm onwards : Gets home, feeds our own pets and does daily personal chores like the rest of the world. If there is any urgent rescue to be done, yes, we head out again till late night at times. Most of us would only get about 4-5 hours sleep daily.

In between those hours, most of the time there will be 2-4 members to do the rescue and inspectorate tasks. Most cases would require immediate medical attention, so off we go to the nearest animal clinic, too. One would have to go up to 4 different places in one go, between the 1-2 hours lunch break. Skipping lunch would be an ordinary occurrence. With this, we kindly ask, please be understanding when we could not come on your beck and call right that instance. We can do without the strings of unkind words, thank you.

Why such hectic schedule? Simple. We just don't have enough manpower to do the work. There are other aspects of SPCA Kota Kinabalu that need to be covered such as fund raising, education, etc..and we would really appreciate the help that we could get from the public. By working together we could establish a more effective and proactive society in helping the animals in need. Therefore, we would really welcome individuals that would come forward, sincerely help out with the tasks and lighten the burden on the existing members.

SPCA KK is a different category of charity as compared to human's. The benefit would only be your own satisfaction of being able to save another LIFE, giving another LIFE a chance for a better LIFE. There's so much that we human can learn from the animals. Seriously, nowadays, the animals are much better than some of the human's behaviours.

Four Kittens Adopted

There were definitely no Monday blues for us but a great news to mark the beginning of the week, as a total of four kittens were adopted, one on Sunday and three more yesterday!

Midnight was adopted by Jojo, while Siti, Lena and Mar, the three good vet nurses from a private animal clinic adopted Liko, Mable and Tammy. Thank you for supporting SPCA KK Adoption Programme, ladies. We at SPCA KK are glad that you will be giving your newly acquired pets lots of tender, loving, care at their new homes with you.

That's What Friends Are For

It's been another great weekend for SPCA KK as a group of friends came over, volunteering to help a member who is fostering a few cats at her place. Lynne, Arlene, Irene, Jojo & Diane did the cleaning up tasks in no time at all. They even managed to bath all the kittens, making them all sweet smelling and cuddly.

Apart from giving their friend a little break from the tasks in keeping the cats' place clean and comfortable for the cats, this is also a way to spend time and get together with each other. A some sort of outing. Arlene was nice enough to bake cupcakes and brought them to share together with tasty sardine sandwiches! Lynne treated everybody with bottles of Coca-Cola & 100 Plus to quench the thirst. What a great way to rest after all the hard work.

That's what friends are for, and this is just another example of teamwork. Friendship and teamwork rocks! If you would like to arrange such an outing with your friends or families, just give us a holler. We would really appreciate it if you could expose your little children to such activities, as the Malay idiom goes: "Melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya", translation to English as "to bend a bamboo, do it while it is still a shoot". It means if you want to teach your little children, it is better to do it while they're still young. So nurture your kids on respecting and loving animals, so that they will know how to respect lives, being responsible, caring and loving them in future. Who knows, they may help them to choose their career path when they are all grown up. You could be shaping a future vet in your hands.

On 17/3/2011 SPCA Kota Kinabalu received a call from a concern member of the society, Mrs. Mary Tan about a pup that fell into a drain at a residential area in Kepayan. The authorities i.e the Fire Department was called to rescue the pup. Fortunately the pup was safely rescued around noon. SPCA Kota Kinabalu would like to thank Mrs. Mary for her prompt action in rescuing the pup which has saved the pup's life. The pup is adopted by Mrs. Mary and is now in safe hands.

PET Stories to Share - A pup named Bobby

I recently moved to KK as my father has terminal cancer. There have been so many awful animal cruelty reports in Malaysia recently, so we decided that we wanted to start a happy story.My family has never believed in paying a small fortune for a pedigree breed of cat or dog. For decades we have always given stray dogs and cats a loving home.I found SPCA KK on Facebook (that's what makes the world go round nowadays) a couple of weeks ago.The very next day one of the SPCA KK members was kind enough to pick my baby sister and me up and take us to the shelter.We were looking for a young male pup and name him Bob, after my dad.In the end, the one who caught our eye was a girl. We named her Bobby. Playful, loving, wonderful cheeky character and fearless!

We took her to the vet a few days later to have her mite/skin problem looked at (it's much better now btw). When we were in the waiting room, a huge black scary-looking dog, about ten times Bobby's size walked in with it's owner. Bobby popped her little head out of the cardboard box I was carrying her in and started barking at the giant dog. The bigger dog started cowering. No joke!

She has settled in so well here at our house, that she is already barking at anything and everything that dares come near our gate. Bobby the tiny guard dog!
She is now part of our family and we couldn't have hoped for a nicer dog.

SPAYING AND NEUTERING DAY @ THE SHELTER

Last saturday, while some members were at Signal Hill doing rescue, and some were at Lokawi rescuing pups, some of the K9 members of the shelter were spayed and neutered. This is one of the steps taken to decrease the over population of unwanted cats and dogs on the street. We also had UMS students who came to volunteer at the shelter.

Signal was spotted by one of the SPCA members. He was thin and hungry. She fed him buns as those were the only food she had with her at that time.

Last Friday (4/3/11) two SPCA KK members went to Signal Hill to try a and rescue a thin and hungry dog that was either lost or abandoned by the owner. Apparently one of the regular joggers who goes there said that the dog has been there for almost a month. The attempt to place the dog in the carrier failed so it was decided to try and coax him again the next day. On Saturday (5/3/11) Signal was successfully rescued and was brought to the vet for check up.

He is a handsome dog and when he was rescued it was found that he was already castrated. He is now placed in the K9 shelters. Signal is a good dog but does not like other dogs to disturb him.

BOBBY THE FEMALE PUP IS ADOPTED

Last Sunday ( 6/3/11) a female pup around 6 weeks old was adopted by a nice family. Mike who just arrived last week from Kuala Lumpur, and her baby sister Marie came to the shelter and fell in love with the pup and named her Bobby after his father. Beside the fact that he loves animals, Bobby was also a form of therapy for his father who is quite sickly. Hopefully Bobby will be happy at her new home and gets the love and care she deserved.

DAY 1 (22/2/2011)

· SPCA KK received numerous calls and emails from the good public to ask to help this poor dog. SPCA KK members went to investigate about the dog seen by people crossing the road to go to Sutera Harbour.The dog named "Cable" was spotted underneath the ASEANA COLLEGEbus. They went near to check hercondition but she ran away.

· The Fire Department atSembulan was alerted and the person in-charge, En. Johnny who pledged their assistance to SPCA Kota Kinabaluwhere and when necessary towards the capture of "Cable" .

DAY 2 (23/2/2011)

· SPCA KKwent to check on "Cable" around12.00 pm and spotted her under a Hilux.The attempt to catch "Cable" was unsuccessful because she was able to slip through. SPCA KK had help from Jayadi and Freedy (the gardeners of Harbour City). The rescue team decided to try again in theafternoon and met up again around 6.00pm

DAY 3 (24/2/2011)

· The Wildlife Rescue Unit was called in to helpdart "Cable", and they came in the afternoon but she was not around and since itwas getting dark, the rescue was set in the morning.

DAY 4 (25/2/2011)

· The Wildlife Rescue Unit was on standby at Harbour City early in the morning around 6.00 am.

· The wildlife staff tried a few attempts to dart "Cable" but unfortunately missed. SPCA KK members came around 6.00pm just tocheck on things and left food for Cable and her puppies. The food was supplied by Kak Nong's Restaurant owner and manager Pn. Asmah who has been wholeheartedly supporting the safe capture of "Cable".

DAY 5 (26/2/2011)

· The Wildlife Rescue Unit was on standby around9.00am and fortunately Cable was finally darted andcaught around 10.00 ++am. The vet from The Wildlife Rescue Unit, Dr. Diana, treated "Cable" on scene and she was to SanctuaryAnimal for further observation.

DAY 6 (27/2/2011)

· SPCA KK members went to Harbour City to feed "Cable's" pups in the evening and fortunately one of the black pup was caught by the gardeners earlier in the morning.

DAY 7 (28/2/2011)

· One of SPCA members went to take the black pupthat was caught by Jayadi and Freddy. The

· pup later named Cole was medically checked andcastrated. He is not a friendly pup (probably scared and traumatized) butprobably will change attitude once the rest of the pups are caught and get usedto new environment at the shelter.

· Another pup was caught was sent to a private clinic for check up. She was later adopted by a nice young lady.

DAY 9 (2/3/2011)

· SPCA members managed to catch "Cable's" two pups with the help of Jayadi, Freddy and Louise. The pups were taken to the clinic formedical check up and will be put up for adoption.

Cable is recuperating and doing well but still scared and looks sad.

SPCA Kota Kinabalu would like to thank Mr and Mrs Lars Jacobsson from Sweden for their generous contribution, Mr. Jimmy Ting, SPCA KK members,The Wildlife Department, DBKK, the private clinic, Sutera Harbour Personnel, Pn. Asma, Kak Nong's Restaurant, The Fire Department, the gardeners and security guards of Harbour City and everyone who was involved directly or indirectly in the attempt to rescue "Cable". The mission would not be a success without everyone's help and co-operation.

"Cable's" trauma is just one of many cruelty cases happening everyday in our society. Her case came to light because of the concern of some people who took the initiative to want change, from cruelty to humane measures, even for a stray dog. SPCA KK commends such people for wanting to help make a difference in a stray's life. Every stray deserves a home and it starts with that small step of being responsible not only towards our communities but also towards our animals - stray or otherwise

The Story of a Dog Named Baby

Recently a 5 month old female puppy was rescued from the Sunny Supermarket vicinity. The puppy had suffered immensely as it had been heartlessly bounded to the same tight collar since it was a month old. This puppy was strangled by the collar as it eventually grew septic as the skin grew around it. A myriad of complexities ensued as the puppy began to show signs of immense pain and trauma from the wounds dealt by the collar. All attempts to capture the dog, from using a net to trapping it in a cage were in vain. It consumed the rescue team roughly a month of effort before they could capture it.

Baby was finally darted and captured with the wonderful assistance of Dr.Mary, who is now with WWF in L.Datu as of 19/1. The sacrifice of forgoing sleep, waiting, cajoling, crawling on the ground all finally paid off for the safe rescue of this dog which took planning and teamwork to successfully achieved... a purely ladies rescue event at that!! Baby was at a private clinic from 19/1 - 11/2; she was spayed on 25/1 ; and vaccinated on 9/2 and finally discharged on 11/2 to the K9 shelter where she's accompanying another young 5 month old fella, Evander.Both get along like a house on fire - hiding behind huge cardboards but creeping out to steal glances at the crazy bunch of K9 hoodlums outside their enclosure and running back to hide again.

I have always been a rabbit and dog person all my life, and has always have a mild case of Ailurophobia, a phobia of cats. I was just scared of getting bitten and scratched by a cat for as long as I can remember. I always kept my distance whenever a cat got near me. So it never crossed my mind that I would be having a cat for a pet, let alone two of them!

I got close with a futsal team mate and we became best buds, so I've been spending a lot of time at her place. She's a cat lover, so I had to tolerate her cats. I don't remember petting the cats though I've been going to her place for almost a year, until this one time when one of her cats gave birth to 5 kittens. These 5 kittens got their unbilical cords entwined after birth, probably because their mother did not have enough time to sever the cords and we only found them the day after and it was around 10 at night. We called up a vet and was adviced to bring the kittens to the clinic the next day. We knew time was a really important factor to try and save them, but my bestfriend just couldn't bear the sounds of the kittens screaming in pain when we tried to detangled them. So that was when I had to do what I had to do, cut the unbilical cord from one of them. I couldn't free the others as they were badly entangled to each other, with one had its circulation cut off from one of the legs, it had turned black. The lady vet managed to free them from each other with a few snips the next day, but unfortunately, they only survived for a few days, leaving the one as the only survivor. And that was the turning point in my life, I became a cat lover, too.

One fine day in February, I accompanied my cousin to the SPCA's temporary cat shelter as she wanted to adopt a cat. I only wanted to look at them but instead fell in love with a kitten and an adult cat. I couldn't decide on which to take home, found out that I could actually adopt them both, so I did! As of 8th February 2011, I became the happy owner of Silver and Duvo (Gedik). Silver is a quiet but playful cat, while Duvo is very affectionate, craving for attention whenever he's not playing with Silver. Though they would come close to me, they doesn't like to invade my space and vice versa beside the occasional request for pettings, until a recent occurance when I was really having a bad day.

I kept hearing and reading stories about how a pet could attune to their owner's mood. I have always been amazed with these stories, but never thought that it could happen to me. As I said, it was really a bad day, and suddenly Duvo jumped up onto my lap as I sat on my bed sobbing away, started to make a massage-like movements with her paws on my arm while watching my face intently and making small meows. Even Silver who has always like to have her space, jumped on my bed and watched me cry. They have never climb on my bed before, has always been on their best behaviours. The moment I started feeling better, Duvo and Silver scattered from the bed and started playing with each other as if nothing peculiar happened. I have always been thankful for the day I decided to adopt them, but that just a proof that I am indeed very lucky to have them in my care. My silent, loyal companions in my time of need, helping me getting through a bad day and gave me hope that all will be well again.

I never have to come home to an empty house anymore, as they will always be at the door waiting for me. They amuses me with their cute and funny antics each day, making me hold them even more dearly in my heart. Because of them, I am now fostering a few cats for SPCA KK, hoping that someday these cats will warm someone else's heart & home with their presence when they get adopted. That's the story of someone who was wary of cats in all of her 31 years of life, turned cats lover. This could be you too, if you let your heart be touched by them, or maybe it could be a dog for you. Give these animals a chance.

To neuter or not to neuter?
You may have chosen not to neuter your cat without realizing the long term effect. Starting from 2 cats, you my end up with as many as 20,000 kittens in a matter of 7 years.

Do you have the means to care for them or to find them homes? It is a known fact that there are a lot of stray cats wandering all around town. The majority of them cannot get sufficient food and are exposed to diseases and to the taunting and cruelty of heartless folks; or may end up maimed or dead from accidents.

According to the experts, neutered cats are healthier and less prone cancerous of the reproductive organs. Cats become less likely to wander and will therefore not get lost, hurt, sick and not incur the wrath of the public from their mating activities.

We have referred to the "Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Islam Malaysia" regarding the neutering of pets. Below is the "fatwa" issued by JAKIM (July 2002):

"All pets like cats and dogs are allowed to be neutered or spayed in order to maintain the health and welfare of both the animals and the community."

"Bahawa mengembiri binatang kesayangan seperti kucing atau anjing hukumnya adalah diharuskan dengan sebab-sebab tertentu iaitu bagi menjaga muslahat ummah."

After studying the messages of the aforementioned "mazhab"s and the medical viewpoint of the SPCA animal experts, 'JAKIM' has decided that neutering of cats for reasons of 'maslahat' is acceptable. It is in agreement with 'qaedah' (way) Fiqhiyyah which states "To choose the lesser of two evils".

In view of the good which can be derived, neutering can be carried out for the well-being of your pet cat. Do not be of two minds anymore. Hurry to your vet to make an appointment to neuter your cat.

Volunteers Making A Difference

Last weekend was a great one for one of the dogs' shelter as more volunteers came in to offer their help. There were two main groups on Saturday, UNITAR students for their charity project and UMS students who came along with one of the regular volunteers, Ju Ping. We welcome another individual who came in to help, Laura, and hopes that she will be one of the regulars too.

SPCA KK does not have any permanent staff to run all the shelters and doing the rescuing works too, among other things. All are working voluntarily, while at the same time doing their day job too to earn their livings. When a group of people get together and pitch in, they really can make a difference. The routine work of bathing the dogs, cleaning and cooking was done in a shorter time. The yard was cleared too, which has been put off before because there were not enough manpower to do so over the weekend.

As of Sunday, one more individual, Louise and a student from UMS came in to offer their help, too. So all in all, there were a total of 13 volunteers who came in over the weekend to make the jobs lighter. Hopefully there will be more individuals who will step forward and become regular volunteers for SPCA KK.

Recently SPCA KK in facebook received a report stating that there was a badly injured dog that got hit by a car and was lying by the roadside. Unfortunately when 2 of SPCA KK members went to investigate the dog was no where to be found.

On Tuesday, one of SPCA KK EXCO members saw a dog by the road side that fits the description given but was not sure it that was the dog mentioned. She stopped by and gave the dog something to eat but the dog refused. The next day (Wednesday), she stopped again to give the dog some food but the dog still refused. It did not eat the food but was breathing hard, walked with wobbly legs. It must have been the one and may be it had recovered and gained some strength.The SPCA KK member tried to go near but the dog jumped across the drain. SPCA KK is looking into this matter to help the dog.

2 Kittens For Adoption

Recently SPCA KK received two new members at the temporary cattery shelter. They were named E-Lan and E-Lin. These two kittens were dumped and were brought in by one of SPCA KK EXCO members. These kittens will be brought to the vet for vaccination. They are good kittens and know how to use the toilet.

There is also a female cat who just gave birth to 5 kittens. They are about 1 week old and just recently opened their eyes.

Volunteers at Our Temporary Shelter

Last Saturday (12 Feb 2011) SPCA KK had 4 volunteers (Melle, Shima, Emily and Ju Ping) who came to help out at our temporary shelter for the dogs. Among the activities that were done were bathing the dogs, sweeping and moping the floor as well as washing their bowls. Apart from that, the most fun part of all was playing with the dogs.

Lukluk was given a bath by one of the volunteers, Emily.

We also had a family who came to adopt a puppy and the lucky pup is Tips. He is cute and very playful. We hope that he would be well taken care of and live a happy life next to his new family. We hope to find

more families and individuals who are keen in adopting a dog or a cat and giving them their love and care.

This is Febi. She got hit a few weeks back somewhere near Likas area. A kind hearted women, Karen brought Febi to the vet where Febi was given treatment for her injuries. She also donated RM 200 to pay for Febi's treatment. After being dischared, Febi was brought to the shelter. Now after a few weeks, Febi is able to walk and lets herself be touched. She is still under medication.

Have you ever wonder why at times you will see the rubbish at the dustbins are scattered all over? Some may think that some stray dogs or cats have been messing around with the rubbish, going through it to find food. Yes, you may be right. But do you know that sometimes it is not even the animals fault? In some cases it is kids who would ransack the garbage bin to find materials that they could sell for money. The 'culprit' are not always the strays.

Meet The Canines

This is Jean. She recently got spayed after giving birth to 11 pups.

This is Jumpy. He is one of the members in SPCA KK temporary shelter. He is sweet and has a very charming personality.

These are Ming and Min. Both are sisters. There are daugthers of Cloudy, the famous dog who got into the newspapers, where her head was trapped in a plastic container for a few days.

This is Nenek. Another member of the Canine shelter. She has a cyst and the cyst burst recently. So now she in undergoing treatment. Hope that Nenek will recover soon.

Good News People !!

We received good news today whereby Silver and Gedik and also Goldie have been adopted just a few hours ago by two nice young ladies, Melle and Shima. I'm sure that Melle and Shima will provide all the love and care for the two new members of the family. Thank you Melle and Shima for supporting SPCA KK. We hope that there would be more people who would be interested to adopt and care for these animals.

Chad the Paralysed Kitten

Silver, Coffee, Leo, Charlie

This is Silver, a female,. Very pretty, has soft fur, good behaviour, playful, toilet trained and likes to eat and sleep in her cage but now let loose. Unfortunately, she is disowned and dumped by the owner at the holding place.Spayed and vaccinated. Good for apartment because she tiptoed on the sand, perhaps always in the house before.

This is Leo, male about 4-5 months. Greedy with food but playful.He was sick, skinny and thought would die. He was taken back to SAMC treated and now he is healthy and ready to be adopted.

Coffee was abandoned.His left eye sort of damaged and not sure if he is one side blind. Eats a lot and easily adaptable with new environment. He was recently castrated.

This is Charlie: just had his 3^rd vaccine last week. He has pitiful eyes and gentle behaviour.

All these cats are held at SPCA KK's temporary cattery waiting to be adopted by good and caring people out there. They are gentle animals and have a lot of love to give and share with anyone who is willing to make them part of their family. Please help us find a good home for them.

The benefits of Neutering/Spaying your Pets

There are many benefits to neutering your dog or cat. The dog and cat neuter surgery eliminates testicular cancer, decreases the chances of developing prostate cancer, and your pet will not be out roaming looking for chicks, thereby decreasing the chances of being hit by a car or being picked up by animal control.

Neutering male cats young may decrease their chances of spraying. Your pet will not become fat and or lazy from this surgery. Obesity in dogs and cats comes from overfeeding and lack of exercise. In some cases a thyroid problem or genetics is to blame but the neuter surgery is not to blame for a fat dog or cat.
